How to hold a pick, how to strum, basic chords, create their own style.

Oh and thank your grandparents because thats probably the best gift you’ve ever gotten. The gift of music.

Your guitar teacher should have a good method book that he works out of to start teaching you to read sheet music and tabs.

You’ll definitely want him to spend time with you working on chords and scales. Get a good foundation in theory and how to really play the instrument, and then eventually you’ll be able teach yourself how to play any song on the radio by ear, as well as write and improvise in any key.

Good instruction in theory mixed in with learning your favorite tunes will keep it fun.

I say learn finger picking. I love that sound so much better than a pick.

The best thing is to learn how to learn, if that makes sense; what I mean is that if you are shown how to develop your ear and how to listen for guitar parts, then you can begin to teach yourself in ways that inspire you. Of course, you have to start with the basics, which any decent teacher will know about- you’ll learn strumming and fingering techniques, picking patterns, etc.
