How long does it take you to learn a song on guitar?

Somedudeguy388 asked:

I have been playing guitar for about 2 years now, I am going to do Certificate 3 in Music at TAFE. I have to perform 2 songs and some basic music skills for the audition. I was wondering; how long does it take you to learn a song on average? How much do you play the song? What do you do to practice? Guitar Pro/Guitar Tab software, play along with the track, read tab? Slow down tracks?

I pick up most songs by ear, but I can’t read music. To learn songs I just play along with the song a few times. If there’s a tricky spot in the song, like a solo, I’ll get the basics down a few times then go about my daily life. A few days later I’ll come back after thinking about it for a while and be able to play the song in its entirety.

Average time to learn song: 3-4 days
How much do I play it: 10 times, average.
What do I do: play along with the song to start, then play on my own.

I can usually get the chords in under 10 minutes. The rest, leads and fills, take a little longer depending on how hard the song is. I use tabs and I play along with the CD. I like EZ Tab. I find the live version of songs better to jam to. The best thing I could tell you is to try to make the song your own. Put your own feeling into it. If you slow down the track make sure that you don’t change the key. Good luck and Peace.

It really depends on you for the most part it sounds like your a decent player having played for two years. I use power tab as well as pro and it helps with keeping the exact time assuming it was tabbed correctly. I would suggest just listening to the song a lot getting a feel and go for it.
