Absolutely both! It will make you much more versatile in the long run.

As you start to learn songs from recordings or at band rehearsals, a good ear will help you quickly figure out what to play.

Learning to read music will accomplish a number of things:

A. It will allow a teacher to assign a lesson that you can practice at home.

B. It will allow you to write down and keep track of ideas, not only for bass but for songs you might want to write or parts for the other instruments.

C. It will enable you to play in different types of ensembles such as jazz band, church or anywhere else where the music is written out for you.

D. It will enable you to one day teach others, if you should decide to become serious about playing the bass.

Best of luck to you!

peace

you need both!!! cuz without a solid example, its hard to get the timing correct on most modern songs, and without sheet -as a beginner- you cant really tell what notes they're actually playing. after months/years of experience, you can use one or the other based on your style.
