Any hints on writing good music for a musical?

Triplethreat asked:

I’m trying to write a short musical just to get the experience. I’ve listened to many different show recordings and noticed that the music usually doesn’t follow the melody. (I’d prefer to learn Sondheim’s style.)

Does anyone have any hints on how to write music for a musical, or should I just keep experimenting? Thanks!

First make sure you know what you want to call the play. You can try to make it sound the same. Good luck. Hoped I helped
