Im tryin to learn guitar. what does it mean when you play a song in “D minor”?

him asked:

I dont get what it means when someone says “ok this song is played in the E minor”. I dont mean specifically the “D” or “E”, i mean any of them. what does it matter? isnt there only one way to place your fingers on the correct note or chord?

  1. Arturo Says:

it may mean to play the E scale, or and chord progression starting with E.

It may also be that the song starts out at the D or E note/chord.

  2. Elvis GuBlue: E. Guru Sings Soul Says:

It’s the key. The notes change based on the key. For example (and this is way oversimplifying) in the key of C major, a song might go “CGC.” That’s a 1-5-1 movement. In the key of D major, it would go “DAD” because that’s the 1-5-1 movement in the key of D. It’s hard to explain. Wikipedia might be able to help.
