Nope...tabs are good. listen to a lot of music and try to play along with it. This isby far, the best ear training you will ever have.

The real trick is to practice both. Playing tabs will help you learn fast (assuming you practice). BUT playing by ear is very, very beneficial, especially if you are a live performer. If you already play another instrument, learning guitar will be easier since you already understand some music theory. If not, then try doing a little bit of both. Leaning from a tab will have you playing a song you really want to play fast, especially if it has solos in it. Eventually you will learn how to "play by ear" but if you do not practice doing so it will take you a long time. Practice both and eventually you will become a pro. Also, as much as it sucks, PRACTICE YOUR SCALES! This will help a BUNCH!

My opinion. Cultivates the correct form of practice. Leads to avoidance of problems by preventing them from the start. Learn correctly from the start and you will get greater returns on your investment of time and money.

I'd say take lessons. Then you wont pick up bad habits on your own. The basics are important and a pro can help you learn
