Playing tabs will help you learn fast (assuming you practice). BUT playing by ear is very, very beneficial, especially if you are a live performer. If you already play another instrument, learning guitar will be easier since you already understand some music theory. If not, then try doing a little bit of both. Leaning from a tab will have you playing a song you really want to play fast, especially if it has solos in it. Eventually you will learn how to "play by ear" but if you do not practice doing so it will take you a long time. Practice both and eventually you will become a pro.
